What media companies can do to create jobs.

What media companies can do to create jobs.

Media companies in Kenya enjoy huge viewership numbers. This is because people like being informed and entertained. These two thing make many people tune in to their tvs and radios on an almost daily basis. This gives a lot of power to those media houses. How can they use their power to create jobs? There are many ways but in this article I will focus on the music industry. The following steps could help the music business.

1.      Create a music competition.

This method has been applied in several media houses. The format is usually similar. First the invite many aspiring musician from across the country and sometimes even in neighbouring countries. They meet in one place and are given brief training programs by already successful musicians. Once a week is over, they compete and the weakest contestant is eliminated. They do this until there is an ultimate winner who is given a cash prize. Now, the problem of this format is that even the person who wins struggles to have a career in music. Just giving a cash prize to the winner is like giving a class two student a scientific calculator and sending him to a kcse exam. The reason could be that this person, even with the cash prize, still does not know how the music industry works. How much does it cost to produce a song/album? How does one get his music on radio? How are concerts organized? These question could be troubling both winners and participants. So after these competitions, many of the participants and winners fade away. How can this narrative be changed? The first thing to do is for the media houses to absorb some of these musicians. Here are some ways to go about it.

2.      Build a studio

Some producers who are currently very famous started their music careers in their bedroom. They just bought cheap equipment and started making beats. Some media houses make billions annually. They can probably afford to build a good quality studio in their premises. The next thing they do is to outsource good produces from across the country. They can then help the aspiring musicians to create good quality music. So the stress of these young artists will be greatly reduced. But what about airplay?

3.      Airplay

There are so many musicians we have never heard of because they don’t have airplay. The solution is to simply play their music. But the problem many broadcasters point at is that the quality of the songs produced are not good quality. Some even say they will loose their viewership if they play some of those songs. This problem can be solved if the media house uses an in-house musician. They will be able to control all aspects of the song from the quality to the content.  The end product would be beneficial for all parties involved. This concept has been proved to work when it comes to local programs. In the past we had a majority of programs shown on TV coming from foreign countries. Right now we have many actors who are employed because of the changes made. The same could happen to the music industry

4.      Advertising.

Once the musicians have good songs, the next step is to advertise. This process is relatively easy because all the broadcasters need to do is to just play the songs. But when is the best time of day to do it? For radio, the best time is probably all day every day. For tv they can probably squeeze in the songs in between programs. The music videos can probably be made in-house because all media houses have video equipment that is probably unmatched by any other private video production companies. The musicians could also be invited to main news broadcasts to sing at the introduction and at the end of news bulletins (sometimes in the middle). Also social media handles can be used.

5.      Money

The media house can sign a contract with the aspiring musicians to take a cut from any revenue they receive. They can organize concerts and take a cut from the ticket sales. This arrangement could benefit the media houses a lot because the musicians will be brand ambassadors to their companies.

conclusion

I think this idea can work well since it will increase jobs and also improve the quality of music in the country.
