In the western world, more and more people are opting to stream music online. This has made music more accessible to a huge number of people quickly. Also people have access to a huge quantity and variety of songs. For example 20 years ago, if you wanted to have 100 songs you had to buy 10 cds. Today, with internet access on your phone, you can have access to millions of songs. The same is true with movies and TV shows. I remember some movies had two VCDs. You would watch half of movie from one of them and then switch to the second one. Technology has really advanced over the years but one thing remains constant, people will always want to be entertained. During this time of corona virus, many people have searched for new ways to consume content. Some who had never used the internet are now learning how to use it. So, how can the Kenyan entertainment industry make billions?

Step one

Infrastructure: - first of all majority of Kenyans will not opt at this time to pay to stream content online. There are so many bills to pay. Imagine someone paying rent, electricity, water, satellite TV, internet bundles and for streaming content online. Many opt to pirate the content they watch. However they still pay for that pirated content. In many estates, you will find a movie shop with hundreds of different movies, series and music being sold. But what if all these shops are connected so that they sell legal content? Imagine one company authorized to distribute content. Once a musician releases a song, he/she hands it over to this company. They in turn distribute it via the internet to all the movie shops in the country. Once that is done, people come to buy the music, either using cash or bongapoints, and the sales figures are recorded in the computer used by the movie shop and sent back. The musician will then be able to view, every day, how many people have bought the song and will be able to claim the cash back from the company. Let’s calculate. Imagine a song is sold at 10 shs. The artist is able to sell 100,000 copies of the song per month. That adds up to 1,000,000 shs. Let’s say he/she releases a song every month. If the sales figures are constant throughout the year, they could pocket 12 million a year, of course before tax and other expenses. This can also be done for movies and series and even books.

Advertisement: - the musicians and the movie actors should take the lead in popularizing this new method of content distribution. They should use every opportunity they get, whether thorough the media or at concerts or even in the streets when they meet people.

For this idea to work, the content creators must make entertaining music, movies and series. People will not buy boring stuff. Also they must be paid promptly so that they can make more content.
