With the introduction of county governments, administration on a local level became easier. Some of the local problems could be solved much easier than if it were to be dealt with by the central government. Job creation has been a problem in Kenya and county governments can actually help. Here are my thoughts

                    Formation of a super Sports league

Many young people still have the energy to play sports. But the question is, how can they make money doing it? First the county government should create a super sports league. This will combine different types of sports e.g. long and short distance races, short put, javelin, chess, darts,weightlifting, gymnastics, acrobatics, swimming among others. Now the immediate problem that arises is how will this be funded? Here are some ways.

·        Ticket sales

Entrance to this event should not be free. All audience members will be required to pay a small fee to enter the event. Tickets can be sold by county officials, Mca’s and chiefs. This money however may not be enough. What other ways can money be raised?

·        Donations

Many big companies may be willing to support the idea. They may make some cash donation in exchange for some advertisement space in the event

·        Food and Wi-Fi

In order to attract a large audience, the ticket price could include a free meal. This can be something simple like ugali and boiled meat with a lot of soup. Also there could also be free Wi-Fi which will attract a lot of internet users.

·        Guest appearances

Invitation can be sent to local celebrities to attend the event. 

·        Individual sports

Emphasis should be put on individual sports as opposed to team events. It is very expensive to sponsor a whole team with uniforms, transport, training ground etc. as opposed to funding one person. Sports like tennis, darts, and chess are easier to organize and require less space compared with sports like rugby, football and cricket. Also you can have an entire tournament of archery in one day (group stages, quarters, semis and final) as opposed to other team sports.

·        Security

The event must be very safe for both the participants and the audience. Any security problems and people will never step in any other event. Also in events, there is usually some cases of women being harassed. This can be solved by having security cameras. People fear being seen on camera committing crimes.

·        Sponsorship

Businesses can be invited to sponsor certain players. This will again favor players of individual sports. This will be one source of income for the players

·        Prize money

Some of the ticket money collected from the audiences should be channeled to the sportsmen and women. This will be another source of income for them.

·        Venue

The venue should be owned by the county so that no expense is incurred in renting a property for the event

·        Website

A website can be created so as to inform the audience and the county at large on the event. Also social media pages should be created to keep everyone up to date. With the free Wi-Fi, many will be able to access the pages.

·        TV

The media should be invited to cover the event.

·        Advertisers

Businesses can pay some money so that they can put banners throughout the grounds

·        Hawkers

Hawkers can be invited to sell snacks to the multitudes who will attend.

·        Vote best dressed

A separate competition for the audience can be created for example best dressed. The audience members can post their photo on the county website and then the person with the most votes wins.

·        After party

When it reaches six o’clock, everyone under 18 should be chased from the venue so that the adults can enjoy themselves. 

·        Dj

A local dj can be invited to entertain the remaining crowd

·        Musician

Local musicians can be given the platform to advertise themselves.

conclusion 

This idea can work in almost all counties. A national super sports league can be created where different counties compete with each other. Even some governors can compete in less demanding sports like darts. Also this competition can help some athletes to go global. It's very hard for a local doctor, lawyer, teacher to be accepted abroad. However it is fairly easy for a sportsperson to thrive abroad. We have seen it happen with our athletes.  And best of all, it will be so much fun.
